Trey and I recently had the great privilege of getting away for a weekend to celebrate our 5-year anniversary (a week early). The weekend was such a gift, in so many aspects. There were many who helped make it happen, and we are very grateful to them all!
The weekend also happened to be our first two overnights without Makenna. I think the main thing I learned was that, while we missed her like crazy, and it was so strange just being without her, it was also REALLY good for us… and, in turn, while she was 100% fine and did great, it was still REALLY good for her, too. All in all, the whole “getaway” concept just for the parents is not underrated. :)
Our getaway was actually a “staycation,” in which we got to do one of our favorite things… play tourist in our own town! This is pretty fun when you live in a tourist destination. We spent two nights at Wrightsville Beach, got to hit the beach that first afternoon, had a couple dinners out, saw a movie in theaters (War Room — great movie!), and even paddled the Loop, which is something neither of us had done before and were really glad we took advantage of. It was a great way to spend the morning together: 3.1 miles on the water and took about two hours. The whole weekend actually reminded me a lot of our honeymoon — a good mix of relaxation and adventure, with some good food to top it off. I even broke out a dress I had worn on our honeymoon. And of course you can’t beat an anniversary in the fall — plenty of pumpkin-flavored deliciousness to be had.
Although we talked about Makenna a lot and what she might be doing and how we missed her… we were also able to fully enjoy getting away and are SO appreciative to Makenna’s “GiGi” for staying with her and taking such great care of her!
This is absolutely the time of year to live at the beach… low crowds, warm (but not blazing) weather, and just a sense of savoring this time before the seasons change again. And savor is just what we did…
